Denim Jackets: a fashion staple

I have my favourite jean jacket at the forefront of my closet. It helps me dress down many of my outfits, and quite often adds to my overall look. I think everyone should have one, or two or maybe even three. They are the perfect addition to almost any outfit, and in Toronto, you never really know what the weather will be like within a 6 hour period.

The beauty of shopping in this day and age is choice

Long gone are the days of a plain jean jacket. We have many choices in terms of colour, wash, style, fit and cut. The added details such as buttons, clips, patches and so forth also help with diversifying each look.

The Looks

As I have mentioned, jean jackets really allow for you to complete your look. I always have my jean jacket close by as it can dress down an outfit, it can provide a finishing look and it can also add some flare.  I have worn my denim jacket to work with some classic pants and a plain white shirt. I have also added the jean jacket to a casual romper to complete the look. (see pictures below)

Statement Denim

My other favourite denim jacket is a military inspired one. The oversized buttons really make a statement. I purchased a smaller size as I would not be interested in clipping it closed. Instead, I keep it open which allows for whatever piece I wear underneath to be seen.  If you are busty, those oversized buttons down your body are probably not ideal and so a better option would be to keep it open.

The Fit

I personally love fitted clothes. My ideal jean jacket is either short or medium length and fitted to my body. The trend this season has moved towards a more relaxed fit or even a boyfriend fit (jeans and jackets). Trends however, are simply guidelines and sometimes they won’t work for your body type or fit in with your personal style. Wearing clothing that fits you properly is the best advice I can give. I also find that material and price are also important, and it is worthwhile to spend a little more on such a piece since you will be using it often.

Here are some guidelines for fit:

Petites : crop jacket, jackets with small pockets and fitted at the waist

Tall: oversized jackets tend to work well for taller women

Busty: shrunken jackets with high placed pockets

To give an hourglass look: Waisted jackets (belted) are great to enhance the waist

*At the end of the day, it is always good to try something on and see for yourself
